Leicester Tigers secured a bonus-point victory and lifted the Slater Cup after defeating Gloucester 38–31 in a thrilling encounter at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Friday night.
The game got off to a frantic start as Leicester fly-half Billy Searle was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on after just two minutes.
Gloucester wasted little time capitalising on their numerical advantage, scoring two quick tries through Jac Morgan and Dian Bleuler. Both tries came in remarkably similar fashion, with the visitors using powerful line-out drives to establish an early 14–0 lead.
However, Leicester responded through Finn Carduff, who crossed following a powerful driving maul from the hosts to reduce the deficit to 14–7 after just 14 minutes. With Leicester now restored to a full complement of 15 players, the momentum began to shift in their favour.
Prince Harry was shown on screens around the ground, as well as on TNT Sports, prompting a mixed reaction from the crowd. However, attention soon returned to the action as Joe Heyes crashed over from close range to level the scores with less than half an hour played.
The final score of the first half also went Leicester's way, as hooker Jamie Blamire powered over following yet another dominant driving maul. Searle added the conversion to send the hosts into the changing rooms with a 21–14 advantage, completing an impressive first-half turnaround after their difficult start.
Leicester continued to turn the screw after the break, with Searle extending their lead through a penalty before Welsh international Aaron Wainwright crossed for his first try in Tigers colours, securing the try-scoring bonus point in the process.
Having trailed 14–0 in the opening stages, Leicester had now surged into a commanding 31–14 lead. It was a remarkable turnaround from Geoff Parling's side, who had responded superbly to their early setback.
However, Gloucester were not ready to surrender.
The visitors struck back through Will Trenholm, who finished off an excellent attacking move following a superb break from Jac Morgan. George Barton added the extras to reduce the deficit to 10 points and give the Cherry and Whites renewed hope of a comeback.
Any realistic chance of Gloucester completing that comeback was dealt a significant blow when Adam Radwan released fellow winger Ollie Hassell-Collins, who raced over out wide to extend Leicester's advantage. Searle once again added the conversion, restoring the hosts' comfortable lead.
Gloucester continued to battle until the final whistle and were rewarded with a fourth try in the closing minutes as Jack Innard crossed to secure a valuable try-scoring bonus point.
The Cherry and Whites then claimed a second bonus point when Barton slotted a penalty with the final kick of the game, reducing the final margin to seven points.
Despite Gloucester's late fightback, Leicester had done enough to secure a thrilling 38–31 victory, collecting five league points and the Slater Cup in the process.
It was an entertaining encounter filled with attacking rugby, powerful forward play and momentum swings, with Leicester's ability to recover from a 14-point deficit ultimately proving decisive.
Attention now turns to Europe for both sides.
Gloucester welcome Bordeaux-Bègles to Kingsholm, while Leicester travel across the Channel to face Pau.
When Gallagher PREM action resumes, Gloucester host Bath in what promises to be another fascinating encounter, while Leicester prepare for a highly anticipated clash against East Midlands rivals Northampton Saints.
