Coventry were given a tough return to the Premier League as they were beaten 3-0 by defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their first game back in the top flight for a quarter of a century.

Arsenal, who won their first title in 22 years last season, were keen to get their defence up and running. In truth, they never showed signs of being troubled by Frank Lampard's side.

The home side were without new signing Bruno Guimarães due to injury, while defender Ezri Konsa was signed too late to be involved in the match-day squad. However, it was another one of their new acquisitions who nearly got them off to a perfect start when Christos Tzolis curled a shot over the crossbar inside the opening five minutes.

They didn’t have to wait long for the opener. Ten minutes later, Riccardo Calafiori’s cross was met by Kai Havertz, who slotted past Sky Blues keeper Carl Rushworth.

Eight minutes later, the reigning champions doubled their lead. Tzolis was involved again as his low cross was palmed away by Rushworth, but only as far as England international Bukayo Saka, who coolly applied the finish.

Throughout the first half, Arsenal—and Tzolis in particular—looked supremely confident. There was a real swagger about the display from Mikel Arteta’s side, marked by poise rather than arrogance.

Coventry struggled to make an impact, managing just one shot on target throughout the game and rarely threatening their hosts. Their misery was compounded when Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard added a third, turning in a pass from Ben White as Rushworth struggled to handle the onslaught.

Arsenal look set to pick up where they left off last season, making it hard to look past them as title favourites. They are only likely to improve once Guimarães, Konsa, and the injured William Saliba integrate into the squad. The Gunners looked exceptional despite rarely shifting out of second gear.

For Coventry, it was a daunting fixture to start the campaign, but they can draw inspiration from the likes of Sunderland and Leeds last season. It is a major step up for Lampard’s squad, particularly for those lacking top-flight experience. However, next weekend offers an opportunity to get early points on the board when they host fellow newly promoted side Hull City. Coventry should have enough quality to survive, though improvements are needed even at this early stage.

Arsenal remain clear favourites for the title, a status reinforced by tonight's display. They travel to Aston Villa next Monday in what promises to be a fascinating clash against a Villa side that has lost key figures in this transfer window.
