After a tremendous win against the Dragons, the Birmingham Panthers looked to carry that momentum into their Round 8 fixture against Nottingham Forest. While the Panthers held the home advantage, the big question remained: could Forest secure their first victory since Round 3?

A Dominant Start for the Hosts

The Birmingham side showcased their potential in the opening minutes, netting the first goal and immediately snatching an interception on Forest’s first center pass. It was a less-than-ideal start for Forest, who struggled to find their rhythm until the closing moments of the first quarter. Tactical brilliance was on display as the Panthers utilized double-marking on Streutker, forcing Forest to pivot their style of play. However, as Q1 entered the "super shot" period, Forest began to find their footing, clawing back into the game via Streutker’s clinical two-point shots.

The Pittman Effect

Despite the late surge, Forest coach Chelsea Pitman appeared unimpressed with her side's opening 15 minutes. Much like the traveling supporters, she demanded a vast improvement heading into the second period.

The message was clearly received. Nottingham started the second quarter with newfound confidence. While the attack showed more promise, it was the defensive end that truly stepped up, forcing the Panthers into several attacking contacts. This pressure forced Birmingham to repeatedly reset back to the transverse line—a dangerous tactic that gifted Forest multiple opportunities to turn the ball over.

By the end of the first half, the Panthers' Wing Defence had earned a warning, forcing a shuffle in the center court to mitigate the risk of further infringements. Meanwhile, Streutker looked increasingly unstoppable, growing in confidence with every successful shot.

The "Pavlova" Brick Wall

The halftime adjustments turned Forest into a well-oiled machine. By the final four minutes of the third quarter's super shot period, Forest had stretched their lead to 13. Even with rotations in the defensive unit, the pressure was relentless. Panthers were left recycling the ball fruitlessly, unable to penetrate what appeared to be a "Pavlova brick wall."

Closing it Out

As the final quarter commenced, Pitman introduced Anya Williams at Goal Attack. The cameo was short-lived, however, as Williams received an unlucky instant warning and was rotated off. Despite the disruption, Forest remained composed—a far cry from their shaky opening quarter.

The final minutes descended into chaos as both sides scrambled to finish strong. While Birmingham managed to claw back a few late points, the mountain was too high to climb. The match concluded 70-54 in favor of Nottingham Forest.

The Race for the Top Four

With the second half of the season underway, the fight for the final four spots is reaching a fever pitch. Forest narrowly missed out on the post-season last year, but with extra bonus points now in their back pocket, they look primed to challenge the London Mavericks for a spot in the finals.
