Guehi’s Man of the Match Performance as City dispatch Chelsea

Manchester City have closed the gap on league leaders Arsenal after picking up a dominant 3-0 win away against Chelsea.

Although the title remains in Arsenal’s hands, the gap has shrunk to six points. Crucially, City hold a game in hand and are set to face the Gunners next weekend in a potential season-shaper. After Mikel Arteta’s team slipped up at home to Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime, the initiative was handed to Pep Guardiola’s side—and they seized it.

A Tale of Two Halves

The first half was relatively mediocre, with neither side truly managing to take a grip of the game. Chelsea thought they had taken the lead, but Marc Cucurella’s effort was ruled out for offside. While both Robert Sánchez and Gianluigi Donnarumma were tested in their respective goals, both made comfortable saves to keep the score 0-0 at the break.

Whatever Pep Guardiola said at halftime clearly worked; City emerged for the second period looking like a completely different side. Rayan Cherki was sensational throughout the second half, and Chelsea simply couldn’t handle him. His performance highlighted the current gulf between the two title contenders: while Arsenal often struggle to find a spark under pressure, City made this 45-minute spell look easy.

The Breakthrough

It took just six minutes of the second half for Cherki to deliver an inch-perfect cross, met by the head of Nico O’Reilly—a name Arsenal fans will surely be sick of hearing—to put the visitors ahead.

Another six minutes later, Cherki was at it again. This time, he played a ball into Marc Guehi, whose touch and finish would be the envy of many a seasoned striker. In the 68th minute, City secured their third. Cherki was involved yet again, working with Jeremy Doku to rob Moises Caicedo of possession 25 yards out. Doku strode into the Chelsea area and finished coolly to seal the three points.

Trouble at the Bridge

The visiting fans were heard singing, “Are you watching, Arsenal?” throughout the closing stages. One fan was even pictured drinking from an Arsenal-branded bottle, mockingly signaling that he believes the North London side have "bottled" their lead.

For Chelsea, it is a different story. Liam Rosenior is facing ongoing scrutiny regarding his side’s performances and form. He is also under fire for his decision to publicly disclose that midfielder Enzo Fernández was being dropped for two games after the Argentine made comments regarding Real Madrid.

The home fans were in a far less buoyant mood than their opponents, shouting sarcastic “oles” as their side seemed content to pass the ball around in the dying moments rather than chasing a consolation goal. The final whistle was met with a chorus of boos and jeers around Stamford Bridge.

Looking Ahead

Chelsea will look to close the gap on fifth-placed Liverpool when they welcome third-place Manchester United to the Bridge on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Manchester City return home to the Etihad on Sunday to host Arsenal in a massive showdown at the top of the table.
