With a last-minute change for both sides, London Pulse and Birmingham Panthers both took to the court wanting to make a statement. However, with the Panthers' change occurring during the warm-up, they started the game on the back foot, ultimately leaving them with one less player to utilize.
The opening minutes of Q1 were closely contested, but as the game entered the first "super shot" period, Sophie Kelly and Berri Neil (or Maseko) took the opportunity to showcase their long-range accuracy. Following an impressive display at the end of the first quarter, the London side stretched their lead beyond 16 goals, leaving Birmingham with a mountain to climb.
Throughout the remainder of the first half, Pulse continued to demonstrate strong connections across all areas of the court. Sophie Kelly and Funmi Fadoju stood out particularly for their ability to attack and defend with relentless intensity. While the Panthers made several tactical changes to increase defensive pressure, it wasn’t enough to stem the tide. The first half ended 42-18 to Pulse—a massive statement with 30 minutes still to play.
In the second half, the London side maintained their high standards, utilizing all 10 players to signal their intent to defend their title. While Pulse shone, the result was a significant disappointment for the Birmingham Panthers, especially given their promising form over the last five rounds. They will undoubtedly be looking to put this performance behind them as they prepare for their next clash against the Dragons.
With the game ending 78-45, London Pulse proved their dominance. The official Player of the Match award went to Funmi Fadoju, while the Club’s Player of the Match was awarded to Alicia Scholes. While both were deserving, Zara Everitt was a quiet superstar; her efforts often go unnoticed, but her ability to read the play and assist her teammates is a testament to her leadership.
As the NSL reaches the halfway point, the stage is set for Round 7. London Pulse host the London Mavericks in Friday night’s "Capital Clash," the Panthers head to Cardiff to face the Dragons, Manchester Thunder welcome the Rhinos, and Nottingham Forest face off against Loughborough Lightning.
