Arsenal have progressed into the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League, winning 3-2 on aggregate despite a 1-0 loss at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea went into the game knowing they needed at least two goals to stand any chance of advancing. It was Arsenal who were the better side in the opening 15 minutes, forcing their way through the home side's defence, though they weren’t able to truly threaten goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. As the half wore on, Chelsea grew into the game and began to create opportunities of their own, but they couldn’t force that all-important breakthrough.
With the score 0-0 at half-time and Arsenal ever so slightly edging the contest, Chelsea knew they needed to come back out and really "go for it" if their European campaign was to continue. The Blues did return in a more threatening mood, forcing Daphne van Domselaar into some vital saves. The hosts also had a brief spell of corners but struggled to make anything of them.
With Chelsea fighting to break the deadlock and forward Sam Kerr having a difficult night, it was actually Arsenal who scored first. A delightful ball was played into the box and Stina Blackstenius got her head to it to steer it past Hampton. However, VAR intervened to offer Chelsea a lifeline, deeming the goal offside.
From the resulting free kick, Chelsea went straight to the other end of the field and nearly took the lead as Sjoeke Nüsken headed inches wide. What ensued next was pure chaos: Chelsea had further opportunities when Veerle Buurman hit the post from close range, and a short time later, Nüsken was involved again as her effort was spectacularly tipped onto the post by Van Domselaar before trickling along the goal line.
The Chelsea crowd simply couldn’t believe what they were watching. On any other night, they might have scored three or four goals, but luck was not on their side—not to take credit away from a magnificent performance by Van Domselaar in the Arsenal goal.
Heading into added time, the game remained goalless and the atmosphere was tense. While patience was wearing thin in the stands, Chelsea remained determined on the pitch, and eventually, it paid off. Following some good work by Kerr, the ball found its way to Nüsken, who this time slotted it perfectly beyond Van Domselaar.
With only 90 seconds remaining, Chelsea fans were suddenly optimistic. They rallied behind their side in search of a vital second goal, but the drama wasn't over. Arsenal’s Katie McCabe pulled the hair of Chelsea’s Alyssa Thompson (an incident McCabe has since commented on via social media), but the action went unpunished by the referee and was seemingly ignored by VAR. Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor protested to the official and was quickly shown two yellow cards, followed by a red.
In the dying seconds, Chelsea were given a free kick near the halfway line which was drilled into the Arsenal box. The ball found the head of Dutch midfielder Wieke Kaptein, who could only head it over her international teammate's goal.
With that, referee Frida Klarlund blew the final whistle, ending an entertaining London derby and bringing the curtain down on Chelsea’s European campaign. The Arsenal players gathered to celebrate with their jubilant supporters, while the Chelsea players were left with their heads in their hands as fans made their way toward the exits.
Both sides return to domestic action this weekend in the FA Cup; Arsenal play host to Brighton, while current holders Chelsea face another London derby when they welcome Tottenham to Kingsmeadow on Monday lunchtime.
