Macclesfield left feeling Glad All Over as they knock Holders Palace out of the FA Cup
117 places separate Macclesfield and Crystal Palace in the football pyramid but it was the National League North side who came out on top as they picked up a famous 2-1 victory at the Moss Rose Ground.
The Silkmen only reformed in 2020 and have managed to make history as they out-fought a dire Crystal Palace side.
It was a tightly contested first half, but Macclesfield took the lead when captain Paul Dawson headed home, 2 minutes before half time.
Palace could not find a way back into the game, and their day was made worse when Macclesfield’s Isaac Buckley-Richards doubled the home sides lead on the hour mark.
There was a huge buzz around the stadium as the minutes ticked on, Palace struggled to cope with the continued pressure being applied by their opponents however Palaces Yeremy Pino scored a free kick in the 90th minute to create a nervous period of added on time for both sides but the Premier League team could not find a way to break through a stern Macclesfield defence.
Macclesfield are managed by John Rooney the brother of England legend Wayne and he was quick to praise his side after the game;
‘we were unbelievable from the first minute. I didn’t see it coming but we deserved the win’
Meanwhile Oliver Glasner slammed his side but was also quick to congratulate the opposition. He said ‘we lacked any kind of quality today. Conceding a set play from a header, we had to do better’ he also referred to the second goal as ‘slapstick’ and said his side ‘lacked anything’ in their performance.
It was a touching moment also for the parents of Ethan Mcleod who joined the winning side in the changing room after their shock FA Cup win. Their son 21 year old Ethan sadly lost his life in hospital last year after a car crash, with the Silkmen and club paying tribute to their former player after the win.
The win for the National League side means we will have a new winner in the FA Cup this season, with the rest of the third round continuing this weekend.
