Tottenham’s wait for a win goes on following another disappointing result, this time a draw away to Newcastle United.
Manager Thomas Frank and his side have been in the firing line from fans and pundits alike following a run of poor results and equally poor performances.
Newcastle dominated the game with greater possession and more shots on goal. However, it wasn’t until the 71st minute that Bruno Guimarães gave the hosts a deserved lead.
Spurs managed to score with their first shot on target when Cristian Romero levelled the score with a brilliant header, just seven minutes after Newcastle had taken the lead.
When things aren’t going your way, it truly does feel like luck isn’t on your side, and Spurs will certainly feel this way. Following a VAR review, a somewhat soft penalty was awarded to Newcastle after it was deemed that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur had been holding Dan Burn inside the area. Tottenham players certainly felt the decision was the wrong one, but that didn’t matter as Anthony Gordon smashed home the penalty to restore Newcastle’s advantage.
The home side thought they had the points sewn up with the game in added on time, but Spurs levelled in magnificent fashion.
A corner into the box was half punched away by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but it dropped perfectly for Romero to somehow place an overhead kick past everyone in the crowded box and into the back of the net for his second goal from Tottenham’s just second shot on target.
Tottenham’s performance certainly appeared brighter in the second half, and more so than perhaps they have had in previous games but still was not at the level expected by many and quite possibly won’t do much to quieten the questions surrounding Thomas Frank and his tactics.
Next up for Tottenham is a home clash against Frank’s former side Brentford on Saturday in what will be a big game for both sides given the home side’s recent struggles and Brentford’s poor away form.
