England have today found out their opponents for the 2027 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.
The Lionesses will face old foes Spain who beat them in the 2023 World Cup, but managed to get revenge over in the Euros final earlier this year.
The reigning European Champions will also face Iceland and Ukraine as they look to secure a place in the World Cup in Brazil.
Qualifying will begin in February 2026 and will run until the end of the year with each group winner gaining an automatic spot in the World Cup. Whilst the remaining sides will take place in further games using a play off system to finalise the last seven places in the competition.
The new format change now bares resemblance to the Nations League matches in which sides are put into a ‘league’ style system. England for example are Group A3 and are the highest ranked of the home nations with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all being in League B.
It has been an interesting week for Sarina Wiegman and her team with continuous press stories surrounding the recent book release of former goalkeeper Mary Earps, who has had lifted the lid on her time representing the Lionesses, also mentioning her former rival for the keeper shirt Hannah Hampton.
Today's group draw will mean focus can now return to the footballing aspect of the side rather than any off the field speculation.
Up next for England are two games against China at the end of November and Ghana at the beginning of December.
One thing for sure is the absence of Michelle Agyemang who is out injured with a ruptured ACL will be massively felt, but it does give new players the opportunities to shine and book their place at the World Cup.
