Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a consortium that today completed the purchase of a one-third stake in Liverpool Football Club.
The group is led by businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Facebook co-founder and billionaire Eduardo Saverin (played by Andrew Garfield in The Social Network).
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns a majority stake in the club, said it has entered into a "definitive agreement" for the sale of a strategic minority investment to the consortium known as 1892 Holdings.
This isn’t the first time Bhatia has been involved in English football; until recently, he was a co-owner and chairman at QPR for 18 years, bringing a wealth of experience with him.
Bezos, however, has yet to venture into sports and will not join the club board, but his investment and business knowledge are sure to be welcome—especially considering he is the world's fourth richest person, with an estimated net worth of nearly £200 billion.
FSG will also now have made a massive return on investment, having bought the club for around £300 million in 2010 from American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
The Merseyside club experienced a turbulent season under Dutchman Arne Slot; however, they have won two Premier League titles since 2019 (2019–20 and 2024–25), which ended a thirty-year drought. They also won their sixth Champions League title in 2019 under now-Germany manager Jürgen Klopp—the club's first European title since 2005.
It remains to be seen how the Reds will fare under new manager Andoni Iraola, especially without Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, who signed for Turkish club Trabzonspor following the expiration of his contract. It has also been a mixed pre-season in terms of results, with the side winning two and losing two of their four friendlies.
Additionally, it remains to be seen how fans will react to Bezos's involvement. Liverpool is a city proud of its working-class roots, and Amazon has previously come under fire regarding worker treatment. For now, though, fans' main focus will be on pitch matters as the team aims to reclaim the league title.
Liverpool begins the new season with a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday, August 23rd at 4:30 pm, which promises to be a fascinating matchup for both sides.
