Today it was announced that Jess Thirlby has chosen to step down as the Vitality Roses Head Coach after over six years at the helm. With the Commonwealth Games just over four months away, the news has sent shockwaves through the netball community. Given the proximity of such a major international competition, many have begun to question the timing of the decision.

According to statements released by Thirlby and England Netball this afternoon, it is understood she is stepping away to prioritize her family following the loss of her father in recent years. Under Thirlby’s leadership, the English side reached the final four of the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 World Cup final—securing a historic silver medal. Her tenure also included Taini Jamison Trophy Series wins in 2021 and 2024, and most recently, a Netball Nations Cup title in 2025.

England Netball has confirmed that Assistant Coach Anna Stembridge, who previously led the program between 2011 and 2015, will take over as Head Coach for the upcoming Games. Olivia Murphy will join the setup as Assistant Coach, while Sharni Layton and Jo Harten will continue in their roles as specialist coaches.

The Performance Director for England Netball commented: "With the Commonwealth Games approaching, it is important that the program continues to move forward with stability and clarity. I am delighted that Anna will step into the role of Head Coach through to the Games, providing continuity for the squad during this important period. She will be supported by a strong coaching group including Liv, Sharni, and Jo, ensuring players and staff continue to receive the expertise needed as preparations build toward Glasgow."

The reaction across social media has been a mix of surprise and uncertainty. Fans are already asking who will take over the permanent role after July and whether a total overhaul of the coaching setup is on the horizon. For now, only time will tell.
